Santee is a suburban city in eastern San Diego County, California. It is located
just 18 miles from the Pacific Ocean, which is easily accessible by State Route
52, a six-lane freeway that runs from Interstate 5 near La Jolla to State Route
67. In 2009, Santee had an estimated population of 58,044 residents, according
to the California Department of Finance.
Community Profile
Santee is one of the communities that collectively make up the informal
designation of East County, along with Lakeside, El Cajon, and to a varying
extent Lemon Grove, Spring Valley and La Mesa. It is a growing suburban
community that in recent years has added upscale housing, a major corporate
business park and expansive shopping centers, along with a destination
recreational complex called Sportplex USA Santee.
History
The city is named after Milton Santee, second husband of Jennie Blodgett, whose
first husband was George A. Cowles, a ranching pioneer in the San Diego area.
Neighborhoods
Geographically, Santee shares the northern part of a valley with El Cajon. Hills
form a natural barrier on its northern and western sides with Lakeside to its
east. The city is bisected by four main thoroughfares; Mast Blvd and Mission
Gorge traverse east and west, Magnolia and Cuyamaca north and south. The center
has been slowly developed over the years with a YMCA being built but is still
largely a field which includes Las Colinas Detention Facility, a women's
detention center. The northern part of Santee behind Santana High is largely
suburban residential and includes Cajon Park elementary and Woodglen Vista park.
The south is bounded by Gillespie Field and El Cajon. This side has an
industrial feel, something that it shares with the northern portion of El Cajon.
As of April 2010, State Route 52 is being extended eastward through this area
from its current terminus at State Route 125 to State Route 67 on the City's
east side. This area contains auto repair shops, self storages, construction
yards as well an aerospace museum that lies adjacent to Gillespie Field,
technically in El Cajon. This museum can readily be identified in the
surrounding area by the large defunct rocket as an informal boundary between
Santee and El Cajon. The western side is suburban residential also. It follows
Mission Gorge Rd. out to Mission Trails Regional Park and eventually the Mission
Valley area of San Diego. Cowles Mountain is a natural landmark that can be seen
all over east county. Locals from east county and eastern San Diego often hike
up this mountain to find a panoramic view of Santee and the entire San Diego
area. Also on this western side is Pinnacle Peak, a country steak house with a
large mounted steer on its roof that's infamous for cutting off all neckties
from its "city slicker" patrons making it somewhat of a Santee institution. This
area has seen a lot of gentrification lately with newly built condos around the
San Diego River. The eastern side slowly transitions into Lakeside as you take
El Nopal eastward. After El Nopal's sharp turn is Hillikers egg ranch with a
large yard that contains an ostrich and two emu. Laying to the east after the
Mission Gorge/Woodside transition is a strip mall, State Route 67 and on the
northern side of the 67, the Santee Drive-in, easily identified with its large
neon marquee.
